Spanish Language Summer Programs in Costa Rica

Young Person’s Program: ages 6-15 + Teen Summer Program: ages 15-18

Both these summer Spanish programs in Costa Rica include 20 hours of weekly instruction. They can be taken for as little as one week up to as long as you would like. The language instruction is age appropriate (e.g. classes for young persons incorporates more hands-on activities, songs, and games).

Each program also includes an additional 6 hours per week of fun and educational activities such as a tropical fruits class, dancing lessons and Costa Rican cooking classes. Students will also be placed in a volunteer project to further deepen the cultural experience.

The course includes:

Costa Rica Discovery

This is a 4 week program that will expose you to several different aspects of Costa Rica and its culture through Spanish language instruction, meaningful and satisfying volunteer work, living with Costa Rican families and travel.

Each week includes 20 hours of Spanish language instruction plus an additional 6 hours of activities such as dancing, cooking and tropical fruits classes.

First week: The first week begins with a program orientation and then focuses on Spanish instruction and culture lessons. This takes place at the school’s headquarters in Heredia, a city rich in cultural heritage.

Second week: You will move to a rural Costa Rican setting, helping to renovate the village school and its grounds. You’ll have plenty opportunity to practice what you’re learning in your continuing Spanish lessons with your host family and their neighbors. Join in a soccer game with the local youths, participate in a play or enjoy a hike through the beautiful surroundings.

Third week: Moving to another village and warm and welcoming host family, you will have the opportunity to share your skills and talents with the disadvantaged children in the community’s school. You can teach them English, help out in the kitchen, do arts and crafts with them, play games and sing songs or help in the kitchen.

Fourth week: This week is for relaxing and taking in the incredible natural beauty available in Costa Rica. Explore the virgin rainforest, soak up the sun on untrammeled beaches and much more!

Summer Program in San Jose, Costa Rica

Teen Summer Program: ages 13-17

This Teen summer program includes 15 hours of Spanish language instruction in small groups. Classes are held 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

This is an immersion program, so classes are taught only in Spanish, the students stay with a Spanish speaking family, and they are encouraged to use Spanish during extra-class activities. The course can be booked for one week or more.

This Teen summer camp includes five morning and two evening activities during the week and excursions on the weekends, and students must attend. Students may take dance, cooking and art classes, go on city tours, bowling, shopping and roller-skating, participate in various sports and much more.

Excursions can include trips to beaches, waterfalls, hot springs, surfing class and activities with their host family. Once a week, students participate in service oriented programs. Students can choose from options such as working in a school or orphanage, learning about environmental protection in a national park or a recycling center, and caring for the elderly.

Classes and some activities are held at a private high school located on 15 acres of land. Facilities include swimming pool, basket ball courts, volleyball court, soccer fields, computer lab and cafeteria.

Accommodation is full board at all times. During the week students will stay in a Spanish speaking family’s home. During weekend excursions, they will stay in hotel rooms with same gender and similar aged students.

Students are closely supervised at all times. All activities are mandatory, and smoking and drinking are completely prohibited and grounds for immediate expulsion without refund.

Program start dates:
Arrival is recommended on Sunday and departure on Saturday with classes starting on Monday between the dates of June 7th and August 16th. Students may, however, start at any time. The school urges enrolling at least one month in advance.

Summer Program in Santo Domingo, Costa Rica

The town of Santo Domingo de Heredia, a suburb of San Jose, the capitol of Costa Rica, is safe and has beautiful natural settings and is, therefore, an ideal location for a teen summer program in Costa Rica.

This course is open to teens aged 14 to 17 and can be taken for 1 to 8 weeks. It includes 20 hours of instruction per week in the afternoons, Monday through Friday.

Teens will be supervised at school and on excursions and activities and are not allowed out at night without supervision by a host family or school staff.

They will not be supervised to and from school, which necessitates a great deal of maturity on their part. Accommodation is within a 5 to 20 minute walk from the school.

This summer program includes:

  • Four lessons each weekday of group Spanish language classes.
  • Class size of 5 students maximum.
  • Course materials.
  • A private bedroom in the home of a local host-family. Accommodation is provided for the Sunday before and the Saturday after the course.
  • 3 meals each day with the host family.
  • Laundry service.
  • Supervised activities and excursions included in the course price.
  • A $5 rechargeable phone card.
  • One month of online Spanish courses before arrival upon request.
  • Round trip airport transfer.

Although the main focus is on learning Spanish, the school includes fun and interesting excursions and activities outside of class time in the mornings, evenings and on weekends.

A student can opt to extend their stay to take in an additional weekend’s excursions for an additional fee.

Excursion Schedule:

  • June 19th, July 17th: Manuel Antonio Beach and National Park.
  • June 26th, July 24th: La Paz Waterfall, Poas Volcano, and Gondola tour.
  • July 3rd, July 31st: Arenal Volcano.
  • July 10th, August 7th: Excursion to Isla Tortuga, Rafting Trip.
