One of the first towns to be colonized by the Spanish, Barva retains much of its authentic Costa Rican flavor, with little English spoken in the area it is an ideal location for the learning and practicing of Spanish . Colonized by Spain in 1561, this town is home to many quaint and charming colonial homes with red tiled roofs and low thick walls. In the center of town is the lovely Central Park with a gorgeous white stucco church nearby that has 19th century baroque influences. The church and the central plaza around it have been declared national monuments by the Costa Rican government, along with the many old buildings and houses in the area that are now preserved under the law.
 The smallest province of Costa Rica, Heredia is a very beautiful area that's situated in the northern central part of the country and is bordered by Nicaragua in the north. Barva is one of Heredia's many picturesque towns that lie on the fertile slopes of the extinct Barva Volcano in the lush and green Central Valley . The word ‘Barva' comes from the name of a local Indian tribal chief ‘Barvac' who used to rule the area before the Spanish arrived here.

Our Spanish Language School in Barva, Costa Rica
Our Spanish Language School is located within the Porrosati Private Reserve just five minutes from the historical town of Barva . Porrosati Private Reserve is a joint American and Costa Rican owned nature reserve with a quiet and beautiful location that provides unlimited opportunities to learn Spanish, enjoy nature, research and of course, relax. Ecotravellers, natural history lovers, student groups and bird watchers will all be delighted with the variety of flora and fauna and other activities that are available in the surrounding area.
 Our Spanish language schools campus is set within five acres of grounds that contain around 50 different kinds of native trees and plants, more than 80 species of birds, and a large river bordering the property. The private reserve where the Institute is located is a unique natural resource which has been developed as a rustic educational laboratory, with six conveniently connected buildings that house ten classrooms, administrative offices, and lots of space to study and rest.

Our Spanish language school in Barva, Costa Rica organizes an extensive cultural program which runs along side its language classes, with a variety of activities on offer throughout each week. The weekly activities schedule is posted on the reception notice board and includes theater nights, concerts, competitions and other games. Participating students are also welcome to join our weekly Latino dance class at no extra cost, with no experience or rhythm required this always proves to be a fun occasion. As we say in Spanish “a mover el esqueleto”!
Another popular event at our Spanish school is the regular Costa Rican fruit and nut class, which is also open to all at no extra charge. This class will introduce you to the wide variety of fruits that are common in Costa Rica, as well as the medicinal and other traditional uses they each have. During this class we make use of the ten separate varieties of fruit that you will find growing within the grounds of our school.
Our Spanish Language Courses
 In Barva we offer a variety of Spanish language courses to suit all individual needs, with our General Spanish Program being the most popular choice. Many students also take advantage of our one to one private lessons, while we also offer many other courses for more specific purposes which can be tailored to your own personal requirements.
Standard Spanish Courses
Our Standard Spanish Course is a straight forward yet intense Spanish language review. The course includes general Spanish grammar rules, emphasis on pronunciation for increased ease of conversation and also allows for practice time for verbal and written Spanish. The goal of this program is to provide the student with basic language skills and functional fluency.
Individual Lessons
 Our individual courses are designed especially for people who want to advance at their own pace, work on specific vocabulary, have special requirements or who simply have limited time. We recommend this program for students who are taking classes for only one week so you can maximize the effectiveness of your limited time with us.
Combined Spanish Course
Students can also choose a combination of both general group lessons and private one to one instruction. This option is useful for students who wish to reinforce what they learn in the classroom with the continuity of an individual tutor. Combination courses can also be effective for students who prefer the general classroom atmosphere but also have specific vocabulary requirements.

Our Spanish language school is happy to assist our students with their accommodation arrangements. In Barva we can organize and highly recommend our home stay with a local family option.
Host Family
 Our host family option is very popular with our students as it offers you the opportunity of staying with a local Costa Rican family close to the school, where you can practice your Spanish skills while also learning more about the culture and traditions of the people. All our host families are screened very carefully to ensure your stay will be enjoyable and productive, while the feedback we receive is carefully monitored to ensure a continuing high standard. The host family option places the student with a family that is usually located within walking distance of the school, although some may require a short bus journey. During your stay with a host family you will receive a private room with house keys, breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as laundry service.
