Learn Spanish in Sucre, Bolivia
Spanish courses in Bolivia, located in the heart of South America. It neighbours Brazil to the east and north, Paraguay to the southeast, Argentina to the south and Chile and Peru to the west. The charming colonial city of Sucre shares the country's capital city status with La Paz which is the legislative and administrative capital, while Sucre is the country's constitutional Capital and the home of the Supreme Court. The city is considered by many to be the “Jewel of South America”, with its relatively low altitude of 2750 meters giving it a warm and pleasant climate year round.
Visitors to Sucre are generally greeted by the city's almost permanently blue sky, which provides a striking backdrop for the brilliant white buildings that characterize the city center. Sucre is also known as “The City of Four Names”, with each of the well known names representing a specific era of the city's history: Charcas, La Plata, Chuquisaca and Sucre.
Whatever you call the city, Sucre has a rich, varied history and a wealth of historical architecture deserving of its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sucre is also a thriving university city, with its San Francisco Xavier University, founded in 1625, one of the oldest university's in the Americas. The city also provides visitors with more than enough attractions, such as museums, shops and restaurants to keep even the most dedicated sightseer, shopper or food lover entertained.
Although relatively small, Sucre is an easily walk able city, with the older sections of white colonial buildings with distinctive red tiled roofs and balconies offering countless nooks and crannies just waiting to be explored. The city is home to a large indigenous population who maintain their traditional clothing and customs, while selling their crafts and goods in the city's markets and fairs. Sucre is also a major agricultural center that supplies the mining communities of the barren altiplano with its locally grown produce, oil from its refinery and cement from its large plant.

Our Spanish School in Sucre, Bolivia is located close to Bolivar Park, just a few blocks away from the city's main Plaza and Central Market, both of which are vital in the commercial and tourist movements in the city. All our teachers are young, qualified professionals, well experienced in teaching Spanish courses in South America as a second language. During your course with us, we encourage interaction between our students and their teachers, all of who are happy to join in with our additional activities, and on our short tours around Sucre. Our Spanish school has several large classrooms with natural lighting, all of which can accommodate either individual or group study classes. The school also has a large airy patio where we offer regular extra activities such as, dance classes and language meetings, while most Friday nights we provide a barbecue with shared chuflays (a spiritual Bolivian drink) and traditional pisco sours.
As well as the patio, our school also has a beautiful sunny terrace which can serve as an outdoor classroom, or simply a nice place to relax and get a tan between classes. Another focal point of the school is the cafeteria where we offer free snacks during your class break. At the cafeteria you can share a coffee with your teachers and fellow students, while also enjoying our seasonal fruits. The cafeteria is also the location for our ever popular Bolivian cooking classes, where students learn the arts of traditional cooking with local ingredients (Additional cost for ingredients).
Our school provides students with access to a video classroom where you can practice your visual and listening skills by watching films in Spanish or listening to songs from Bolivia and the rest of South America. The video classroom is available every day during the week. We also offer free internet access to students during the day time. The school also has a Library filled with a variety of Spanish books to aid your studies, with a book exchange where you can trade books in various languages.
At our Spanish school we realize that our Spanish courses are only one part of the overall learning experience. With this in mind we provide a wide variety of additional activities and excursions that not only give students a welcome break from classroom, but also offer countless opportunities for practicing the Spanish language in an authentic environment. Extra activities include, Salsa dance lessons, traditional Bolivian dancing, city tours, cooking lessons and many more. We can also provide students with bicycles for rent on a daily or weekly basis at very reasonable rates, which gives students the freedom to explore the area at their own pace.
Once a week, the school schedules an informal conversation session with students who are learning Spanish, local Bolivians and Latinos who also want to learn other languages. For the first thirty minutes we speak in Spanish about different topics, while the second thirty minutes is conducted in other languages.
Our Spanish Courses in Bolivia, South America
Our Spanish School in Sucre, Bolivia offers students a choice of either a Standard Spanish course or an Intensive Spanish course. As our school has two locations, one purely for Spanish lessons and the second for students who want to live and study at the same place, we can offer both courses either with or without accommodation. Our accommodation program includes lodging for seven days a week in our school house, with two meals per day (breakfast and lunch). Each student receives a private bedroom, with shared bathrooms and big kitchen where all the resident students share their meals and free time with teachers and friends. The school house also has a swimming pool and beautiful gardens for relaxation between lessons.
Prior to commencing the course, each student is placed in a group according to their language ability, with classroom material for each level of study provided, including audio visual material, written exercises, activities and Latin American films and music. Advanced students also study literature and Bolivian or South American history.
Standard Spanish Course (20 hours)
Our Standard Spanish Course consists of four hours of lessons per day, with each day divided into two hours of grammar and two hours of language practice, using conversation, listening, writing and any other specific activity or situation in which the student needs to interact using Spanish. During each lesson, students will be given breaks when they can talk with other students and teachers and enjoy free snacks in the school's cafeteria.
Intensive Spanish Course (30 hours)
Our Intensive Spanish Course consists of six hours of lessons per day, with four hours in the morning divided into two hours of grammar and two hours of language practice, using conversation, writing and listening skills and other activities outside the school. The two hour afternoon session is used to practice the various things learnt in the morning, with debates, analysis and discussions based on various topics.
Our school in Sucre also runs volunteer programs. These include the Sucre psychiatric hospital, the psycho-pedagogical institute, local orphanages, daycare centers, women's aid groups and child laborer educations centers. Please contact us for further details.

Students who do not wish to stay in our schools lodging house can be provided with a variety of other interesting options. While you are learning with us in Sucre, we want you to enjoy a living situation that best fits your personal needs and where you feel comfortable. As such we are happy to arrange either a home stay with a Bolivian host family or to help you select your own lodging at a local hostel or hotel.
Home Stay:
One of the best ways to learn Spanish and get a first hand perspective of Bolivian culture is to live with a Bolivian family for the duration of your course. Living with a local family in Sucre, you will have the opportunity to get to know our country's customs, traditions, and typical food in a unique environment that is unavailable to most tourists.
Students living with a local family will have their own bedroom and share other areas in the home with their host family. Depending on your preference and schedule, you may choose to have both breakfast and lunch with your host family or breakfast only. Host family homes are generally located within easy walking distance of the school or the downtown area.
Hotels and Hostels:
For students who prefer to live independently, we are happy to give advice on the various accommodation options available in Sucre and help you select one that best fits your needs, whether it is a budget hostel or a luxury hotel. Due to the wide variety of accommodation available, interested students should contact us in advance so the appropriate reservations can be made.
