The once imperial city of Bamberg is located in northern Bavaria and is considered one of the most romantic of German cities. When Heinrich II was crowned king of Germany in 1002 he chose Bamberg as his favorite residence and laid the foundations for the development of the city, which started in the Romanesque period and reached its peak in the Baroque era. In 1993 Bamberg was awarded "World Heritage" status by UNESCO. The town was scarcely damaged during WWII and still retains many splendid mediaeval architectural features and over 3000 historical buildings.

Because of its complex history and the influence by university and the church on the cultural life of Bamberg it offers a great diversity. On the one hand you can choose between 13 museums, 10 galleries and 8 theatres and it is the home of the world-renowned classical orchestra, the Bamberger Symphonic. On the other hand, there are street festivals, bars and clubs for people who enjoy going out at night. According to your individual wishes, this course can be extended to one-to-one tuition.

This course includes a supplementary six hours a week during which you use your German in a practical way, communicating with Germans or immersing yourself in German culture. Instruction materials are included in the course fees. Please do not forget to bring a good dictionary (at least 70,000 references).

Course schedule: Monday through Friday: 9 am to 12:30 pm

Length of course: You may register for a minimum of 1, and a maximum of 16 weeks. Please note that if you choose to stay for one week you can only do so in a hotel or private apartment.

Course begin for all levels, the duration of the course (1 to 52 weeks) is determined by yourself:

Combined Courses

20 lessons per week in a group Plus 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 lessons of One-to-one training. Choose this course if you would like intensive group instruction in the morning, but would also like to take advantage of individual training. Your course instructor can address your individual needs, questions and difficulties in the 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 additional individual lessons per week. You choose the topics of your specially tailored course from pronunciation training to reading specific professional texts.

This course also allows you to take part in all afternoon and evening activities. Allow up to 2 hours for course preparation and homework for your group course in the morning and about 1 hour for every 2 one-to-one lessons you take.

Sharing with Germans of your age group

You will have a single room in a private apartment and will be living together with one or two Germans. We will make sure that your age matches those of your flat mates.

The landlords/landladies are single and their ages range from 20 - 65. Most of them are professionals or students, so we will be able to find a matching flat mate for all age groups. You will have a room of your own, but you will share the kitchen and the bathroom. In general 2 people live together in one flat. Most student flats are centrally located which means between 5 and 10 minutes on foot.

If you want to stay with a working professional. we will arrange accommodation for you in his / her home. The age of these people ranges from 20 to 65. You will have a room of your own but will have to share the kitchen and the bathroom. The advantage of such an arrangement is that you can maintain contact with a German yet remain independent in organising your own activities. Most of these places are centrally located which means between 5 to 10 minutes on foot.

Home Stay

There are only few select families available. If you are interested in this type of accommodation, please book early. We have families of all different ages: Some families have small children or children who go to school; in other famillies the children do not live at home anymore.

The food offered by the families is mainly traditional regional fare. There are also families who prepare vegetarian or whole grain dishes. Let us know in advance if this is important to you, and we will try to match you up accordingly. If you decide to stay with a family, you must be prepared to adapt to the eating habits and eating times that are common in Germany.

When choosing a family, the quality of the family involved and how you think you might get along with them should be your first considerations, rather than the distance to the school. You may therefore find that you will not be staying in the very centre of Bamberg, and that you have to take a bus or ride a bicycle to the school/town centre. The maximum duration of a trip either by bus or by bicycle is 15 minutes.

Staying with a family will familiarize you with everyday life in a German family and will offer you the chance to take part in family activities. We especially recommend staying with a family to those participants who do not wish to cook and who generally do not need to use the kitchen (cooking is not possible when staying with a family), as well as to those who would like to adapt themselves to the pace and schedule of a family. To the extent that the above applies, staying with a family is a suitable option for people of all ages.

Apartment

EUR 35 to EUR 50 per day for an apartment of about 40 square metres. Bigger apartments with an excellent equipment can be rented for about EUR 60 per day. You will live on your own in a completely furnished and equipped apartment with kitchen, bathroom, TV and telephone, so you will also be able to connect to the Internet (also with DSL conection).

The apartments are all very nicely located and are offered by professional agencies at a daily price. We offer a broad selection of holiday apartments, either located in the old town or in the green surroundings of a suburb.

If you choose this form of accommodation, you are completely independent and, as opposed to a stay in a hotel, you will have the opportunity to cook a meal.

Guest Houses and Hotels

You can choose between guest houses and hotels of different price categories. The criteria for our selection were location, service, equipment and a special discount for our students. The prices include breakfast. Please contact us for further details.

Arrival and departure:

If private accommodation is chosen, your room is available one day before course start, i.e. on Sunday. After the last course day on Friday, you can remain in your accommodation until Saturday.
