English Courses in the USA - English Courses in Los Angeles

English Courses in Los Angeles

Learn English in Los Angeles, USA

Located on the Pacific coast of southern California, Los Angeles is the USA's second largest city after New York. The city's substantial coastline extends for 122km (76 miles) from Malibu to Long Beach, while inland the city sprawls out to fill a vast, flat and once arid basin ringed by the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains. Los Angeles has long been the USA's gateway for immigrants from Asia, the Pacific Rim, Eastern Europe, Mexico and Latin America, with residents from over 160 countries, speaking 96 different languages known to make up this vibrant and cosmopolitan city.

Los Angeles was originally founded in 1781 by Mexican settlers and given the rather grand title of El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula (the Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula). Since those early days the city has been known as everything from La La Land to Tinseltown, but today it is most commonly referred to as simply L.A. However, Los Angeles is actually just the largest of 88 different incorporated cities that have gradually joined together to form the greater metropolitan area that is modern day Los Angeles.

Over the years, the city has grown from a simple frontier cowtown to a Gold Rush boomtown and then an oil town, all of which were driven by the endless stream of settlers who have headed to the city in search of their fortune. On average, the city enjoys 292 sunny days each year, with little rain and cooling sea breezes, while the sunsets can be nothing short of spectacular.

With all the film industries major studios, such as Paramount, Universal, Fox and Warner Brothers, still located here it is no surprise that Los Angeles is labeled the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World'.

However, visitors will find there is much more to LA than Hollywood. Disneyland, America's most famous amusement park is the area's most popular site and well worth a visit no matter what your age. The city is also home to many well known cultural institutions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the LA Philharmonic, the Getty Museum and the Getty Villa. Other sights and attractions that draw visitors to the city include the Hollywood sign, the celebrity mansions in Beverly Hills, the nightlife of Sunset Strip, shopping on Rodeo Drive and the pavements dedicated to the stars on Hollywood Boulevard.
