English as a Second Language Program

This program is designed for students who would like to improve their English language and prepare for future studies in business. All ESL Instructors have Masters Degrees in language instruction. They provide excellent instruction in a small classroom setting, 12-14 students. Students enjoy plenty of personal attention.

The content of the curriculum for each level of program is focused on literacy skills, vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar. Listening and speaking skills are practiced in each core curriculum class. Additional attention to listening and speaking skills is available through elective classes.

This ESL program consists of 6 Levels and each level of program normally requires 16-20 weeks.

Learn English in ChicagoBasic A: Basic language skills designed to meet daily needs. Aural development, oral readiness and reading readiness are stressed. Comprehend spoken English in familiar contexts. Communicate about basic needs and routine activities and participate in basic conversations about routine social situations. Generate sentences related to daily activities and personal topics.

Basic B: Further development of beginning level English skills. Comprehend spoken English in familiar contexts. Communicate about basic needs and common activities and participate in basic conversations in routine social situations. Generate sentences into short, loosely organized paragraphs related to daily life and personal topics.

Intermediate A: Integration of intermediate language skills; development of the ability to discuss and write with a degree of accuracy and fluency; introduction to intermediate grammatical structures; emphasis on communication skills necessary for real-life situations including classroom and vocational settings.

Intermediate B: High intermediate language skills designed to meet daily needs in familiar situations, with emphasis on fluency and communication. Conversational strategies for appropriate interaction in American work and social settings; cross-cultural discussions about social customs and practice in telephone procedures; improvement in standard American English pronunciation, voice quality, and physical presentation.

Advanced A: This Program helps intermediate learners of English improve their conversational fluency and gain confidence in their ability to communicate with native speakers in a wide variety of settings. There is also an emphasis on vocabulary building, idiomatic speech, listening skills and grammar errors as they affect communication.

Advanced B: The Program focused on persistent syntactical problems, including in-depth analysis of English grammar for advanced ESL students preparing to pursue academic or vocational studies. The structure of Standard English is explored, including a review of all tenses, the use of modals in real and hypothetical conditions, active and passive voice, sentence functions of gerunds and infinitives, coordinate and subordinate conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs and other logical connectives and their use in oral and written discourse.

Advanced Plus A: This Advanced-Plus level focuses on analytic reading skills, essay writing and refining the use of English syntax. Reading and research materials highlight cultural content and contemporary issues in American society and serve as models and prompts for compositions. Essays will focus on research and the development and organization of ideas using complex sentences in coherent, well-developed paragraphs.

Advanced Plus B: Further improvement of advanced level English skills. This level develops analytic reading skills, essay writing and refining the use of English syntax. The reading component emphasizes patterns of essay organization, relationships of paragraphs within essays, and understanding of the author purpose, audience, tone, and mood. Essays will focus on research and the development and organization of ideas using complex sentences in coherent, well-developed paragraphs.

Business:

In this course, students focus on the language used in meetings, negotiation, marketing and other types of professional interaction. Classroom activities include listening and speaking in a business environment; reading business texts; critical thinking, case study analysis; participating in discussions, simulations and seminars; developing business vocabulary and idioms; doing formal and informal presentations and writing business documents such as memos and reports. Students also learn about North American business culture and practice workplace etiquette.
