Our English School in Sliema

Our school of English is strategically situated on the Sliema seafront with breathtaking views of St Julian's Bay. It is conveniently located a few meters away from the beach, close to both the commercial centre and to the nightlife district of Paceville.

The environment at our language school is an international one with students of different ages and backgrounds from 40 countries around the world. Besides learning English, you will have the opportunity to meet a variety of people and learn about diverse cultures and different ways of life.

The school offers a number of facilities to aid you in your studies. These include:

Teachers are the school's primary resource and have been carefully selected not only for their qualifications but also for their experience and interpersonal skills. Our teachers hold a teacher's warrant issued by the Department of Education together with qualifications in the teaching of English as a foreign language. All teachers are native speakers of English and are well equipped in the use of new and exciting student-centered learning and teaching methods to help you learn quickly and effectively. They regularly participate in refresher training courses and are at the cutting edge of their profession.

Courses start every Monday throughout the year and last from one to forty-eight weeks. However, it is very often possible to place you in an existing class if you arrive mid-week. If you choose private tuition, the schedule is flexible with an option for tailor-made courses and lessons held mornings, afternoons or evenings. Courses can also be specifically designed to suit the requirements of people from the same company or organization.

Upon arrival you will sit a written test. This enables you to be placed in the class most suited to both your level of English and your age. Courses are offered at five levels: elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. You will then have a short interview to assess your conversational skills. (Beginners may choose private tuition).

At the end of your course you will be given a certificate of attendance. This certificate is evidence of your fluency and proficiency in English and can be used in future academic and work situations. Should you require a more detailed assessment report, a request is to be made to the Director of Studies at the start of your course.

Our English Courses in Sliema, Malta

Our primary concern is to ensure that you are satisfied with the course chosen and that you get the maximum benefit from the selected program. Our courses are structured to help you become more confident in English through the teaching of language systems (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) and the development of communicative language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

Upon arrival in the school you will sit a written test. Your speaking and listening abilities will also be assessed and you will be placed in a class most suited to both your level of English and your age. You will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.

Group Courses are held between 0900 - 1230 hours.

Standard Group - 20 Group lessons

Lessons take place from Monday to Friday and there are 20 group lessons of 45 minutes each per week. The course covers the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, together with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The emphasis is on communication, which will enable the student to build up a rich vocabulary base, to improve communicative fluency and to develop confidence in the use of the language.

Standard Group - 30 Group lessons

This course consists of 30 group lessons of 45 minutes each per week. The course is similar to that of General English 20 Group lessons but offers 10 extra group lessons per week for more intense learning.

Combined - 20 Group lessons + 10 private lessons

Students taking the General English Course in the morning may take supplementary afternoon private lessons to benefit from extra conversation practice or other special skills.

English Examination Courses - 20 Group lessons + 10 private lessons

Lessons take place from Monday to Friday and there are 30 lessons of 45 minutes each per week. The course is made up of 20 Group lessons in General English and 10 private lessons in specific exam coaching. We also offer the exam preparation courses with 20 Group lessons in General English and 10 Group lessons in specific exam coaching. The General English lessons focus on grammar, speaking, listening, reading and vocabulary development giving the student the opportunity to improve all areas. During the private lessons or afternoon group lessons the student will develop the skills and techniques needed to pass the exam.

TOEFL Examination

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) evaluates the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. Most people who take the TOEFL test are planning to study at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada . TOEFL is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of instruction. Students follow a group General English Course and have private tuition in TOEFL in order to gain the confidence needed to score well in the TOEFL examination.

Cambridge Examinations

These prestigious examinations are organized by UCLES, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate . They are ideal for long-term students seeking to achieve near native competence in English. You are tested in all the four communicative language skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing. The examinations offered in Malta are at five levels.

Below are the target levels that students should reach by the time they sit for the exams:

• KET (Key English Test) - Pre-Intermediate
• PET (Preliminary English Test) - Strong Pre-Intermediate
• FCE (First Certificate in English) - Strong Intermediate/Upper Intermediate

BEC (Business English Certificate)

BEC is an internationally recognized business qualification, organized by UCLES, which can help you show that you have learned English to an appropriate standard and can use it in a professional context. It tests English language ability used in the context of business The examination assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking in work-related situations and is aimed at three levels of competence: BEC Preliminary (lower-intermediate), BEC Vantage (upper-intermediate) and BEC Higher (advanced).

IELTS Examination

IELTS (the International English Testing System) is jointly managed by Cambridge (UCLES), the British Council and IDP Education Australia. It is designed to test the language skills needed to study or work in the English language. The reading and writing skills can be tested in either academic English (ideal if you plan to go on to higher education) or in general training, which is suitable if you plan to work or train in English, or if you need IELTS for immigration purposes. IELTS is accepted by most Australian, Canadian, British and New Zealand academic institutions, and by an increasing number of United States academic institutions.

Many universities require an IELTS examination score of around Band 6 for entry to their degree courses, which corresponds to a Strong Upper Intermediate level.

English Courses in Sliema - Accommodation

Our school can help you find suitable accommodation in Malta but, should you prefer to do so, you may also make your own arrangements. We have a selection of English speaking host families, apartments, hotels and guesthouses and will do our utmost to ensure that your accommodation in Malta is compatible with your needs. However, reservations in peak season are subject to availability.

Host family

This gives you more opportunity to speak English and to get to know the Maltese way of life. Host family accommodation consists of shared accommodation and is inclusive of breakfast and an evening meal. A packed lunch and a single room can be booked at an extra cost.

On registration, full details of the host family will be given to the student. We request that the family has a good standard of spoken English and that their home is kept in a clean and orderly state, that a fan / heater is provided and that bed linen is changed at least once a week, towels twice a week. The host family does help out with the laundry but students also have access to a washing machine and cleaning materials.

With regards to food, breakfast is usually a light meal and consists of juice, cereal, toast with butter or jam and tea or coffee. The packed lunch is optional and is made up of two sandwiches, mineral water and fruit while dinner is a three-course meal inclusive of dessert and mineral water. Dinner is served at around 7 - 8pm so that students can be free to go out in the evening, either alone or to an activity organized by the school.

School Residence

The School Residence is the ideal student accommodation located in the heart of Sliema just 5 minutes walk from the school. There are 18 comfortably furnished, self-catering apartments with one, two, or three bedrooms. They can be booked as shared room, single room or single apartments. The maximum number of persons that will be accommodated in one bedroom is 2. Each bedroom has a safe deposit box. The Residence is only available to students over 18 years of age.

All apartments are serviced by a lift and have a lounge and dining area, a kitchenette, a bathroom with toilet and either a terrace, balcony or windows. The residence also provides a coin operated launderette.

Students booking school residence accommodation will automatically be charged for the arrival transfer (Euro 20) as our taxi driver will hand you over the key to your apartment.

Apartments

For those students who require more independence and freedom, we have a range of self-catering apartments close to our school premises to choose from. All apartments are fully furnished and include a washing machine, kitchen utensils with a cooker or microwave. Apartments are subject to availability and we recommend early bookings. Hotels & Guesthouses

A large number of hotels and guesthouses can be found in close proximity to the school. Hotels on our list range from two to five stars and most have a TV in the room, air-conditioning and a swimming pool. Please contact us for details.
