The Maltese Islands, which consist of Malta (the largest of the Islands), Gozo, Comino and two other small-uninhabited islands, are strategically situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Malta is 93 kilometres from Sicily and 288 kilometres from North Africa due South. A series of low hills with terraced fields on the slopes characterize the Islands. The coastline of Malta is well indented with natural deep harbours, bays, creeks, sandy beaches and rocky coves.

The island possesses a wealth of history and culture, which surpass its diminutive size. Excavations indicated the existence of an advanced culture dating from 4000 BC. Due to its strategic position and excellent natural harbours, Malta has always attracted the attention of maritime powers. The harbours provided a sheltered base for naval fleets, whilst the island itself, situated at the cross-roads of the Mediterranean, enabled its colonizing power to exercise control over shipping in this vast and turbulent sea. Control over Malta was a prerequisite to dominion over the Mediterranean and for this reason all the various powers that, at one time or other, held sway over the Mediterranean at that same time exercised control over Malta. The long list of Malta's colonizers, The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Norman's, Castilians, Knights of St. John, the French and finally, the British, is indicative to the important role Malta played in the moulding of European and Mediterranean history. The Maltese love festivities and through their religious culture one can witness colourful celebrations throughout the seasons. Their Characteristic joviality springs mainly from the agreeable, sunny, warm Mediterranean climate. Malta became a member of the European Union on 1st May 2004.

Malta's climate is strongly influenced by the sea and has a typical Mediterranean flavour. Winters are mild with rare occurrences of cold weather brought by north and north-east winds from Central Europe. Summers are hot, dry and very sunny. Daytime temperature in summer are often cooling by sea breezes, but in spring and autumn, a very hot wind from Africa occasionally brings unpleasant high temperatures. This is scirocco, which also affects Greece and Italy ; in Malta the air is usually rather drier because of the short sea track from the African coasts. Annual rainfall in the Maltese Islands is low - averaging 578mm a year - and the length of the dry season in summer is longer than in Southern Italy. The Islands have a very sunny climate with a daily average of five to six hours of sunshine in mid-Winter and more than 12 hours a day in summer.

Our school is within walking distance of the University of Malta (which is one of the oldest in Europe ), the Yacht Marina and Sliema - Malta's largest and most modern town. Cambridge English Examination Courses

• 20 (semi-intensive) or 30 (intensive) lessons per week.
• Maximum of 6 students per class.
• Timetable: Mondays to Fridays 09:00-10:30 ; 11:00-12:30 (Semi Intensive).
  Or Mondays to Fridays 09:00-10:30 ; 11:00-12:30 ; 13:00-14:30 (Intensive).
• Tests: Twice a year (December and June).
• If there is only 1 student at a particular level, the lessons will be reduced to 10 (Semi-Intensive) or 15 (Intensive).
• If there are only 2 students at a particular level, the lessons will be reduced to 15 (Semi-Intensive) or 20 (Intensive).
• Courses are available at all the following test levels: KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE.
• Specifically set course-books and audio-visual materials are used throughout the courses.
• A series of mock tests prepared exclusively by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) in all five test papers ( Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Use of English) are held in the last week/s of each course.

• Tests: Monthly (special sessions can also be arranged).

Home Stay

Our friendly, hospitable families are carefully selected to guarantee the comforts of home. This gives you more opportunity to speak English and to get to know the Maltese way of life. Regularly monitored, the host family ensures a comfortable and friendly environment.

Breakfast and dinner (half board) are provided with either single or twin rooms. The packed lunch is optional and is made up of two sandwiches, mineral water and fruit. Bed linen is provided by your host family and laundered every week, however we kindly request that you provide your own towels. The host family does help out with the laundry but students also have access to a washing machine. The families continue the English experience and students can practice at home what they have learned at school.

Apartments

You may choose to stay in one of our Self Catering Apartments.  All apartments are located within walking distance of the school (maximum - 10 minutes on foot). Our apartments are equipped with all amenities, including washing machine, television, fans and heaters. All apartments have a fully equipped kitchen. You can choose a single room or a shared room. Apartments are cleaned once a week and water & electricity are included in the price.
