English Schools in ScarboroughAccording to local legend, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) was once a regular visitor to the home of our English School in Scarborough. Today, the beautifully maintained 19th century Hall is surrounded by traditional English gardens which, during the summer months, are used by all for social gatherings and relaxation. Our English language school is located just ten minutes walk from the centre of Scarborough where you will find a full range of services including banks, post offices, cafés, bars and designer stores.

Since 1968, our school has built an excellent reputation for teaching English courses to thousands of people of all ages from all over the world. Our professional, experienced team will give all students a warm welcome and do all they can to make everyone feel at home, whilst also providing all the support needed to ensure students can relax and enjoy learning. In Scarborough we pride ourselves on being able to offer our students the best of the old and new, meaning old fashioned care and attention to detail in an historic environment, with the latest equipment and techniques to ensure a successful learning experience. Our resources for students include comfortable classrooms, a modern multi media self access learning centre with listening facilities, computers with a range of the latest educational software, a library of books for loan by students and a television/video/DVD lounge. Our coffee and social area, which also houses a free internet facility, provides a place to relax during breaks.

Our English Courses in Scarborough, England

Our English School in Scarborough offers a wide choice of English courses, with English for Communication, English Plus and a choice of Vacation courses on offer. On arrival at our school all students will be given a short test to ensure that they are placed in a group with the appropriate language ability, with all levels available from beginner to advanced.

Standard Group (24 hours)

Our Standard Group course is aimed at students who want to learn or improve their English for social, pleasure, travel, business, professional and academic purposes, with the main focus of the course being to improve accuracy and fluency. This English language course can be of any duration between 1 and 50 weeks and is open to students of all ability levels. The course consists of 24 hours of group lessons per week, with 4 hours of optional self learning with a teacher in attendance. On this course the maximum number of students in a class is 14, however classes average between 6 and 10 students during the autumn and winter.

By the end of the course students should be able to communicate more accurately in past, present and future tenses, with a deeper understanding of modal verbs, prepositions and phrasal verbs as appropriate to each level and duration of course. Students of all levels will also greatly improve their ability of the four main skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Standard Group (16 hours) + Excursions

This course is designed for students who like to be active whilst learning a new language. The course consists of 16 hours of Standard English in the mornings from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm four days a week, with a full day excursion included each week during the summer months of June, July and August. During the remainder of the year when excursions are not available students will receive 20 hours of General English between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Monday to Friday.

As well as the weekly excursion, students choose a specific activity at the start of the course which they participate in three afternoons a week, with three different activities to choose from including golf, horse riding and 4x4 offroad adventures. This course can be started on any Monday of the year and is available to students at the elementary level or above.

Standard English tuition is given in groups of a maximum of 14 students at all levels of English from beginner to advanced. All students are given a placement test on arrival and then put into a class appropriate to their level. The course covers all the main skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as improving grammar and vocabulary and developing students' communicative abilities.

Individual Courses

Anyone who needs to improve their English for a specific purpose, be it business, professional or academic. On this course you will update your General English and explore the vocabulary area and language functions of your special interest. The objective of this course is to improve all four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing in the chosen context. Or you might require intensive preparation for a specific examination. Just tell us what your needs are and we will prepare a course for you.

IELTS Preparation Course

To prepare for IELTS you need to book a 28 hours course, for a minimum duration of one month, you can book for any number of weeks in excess of this if you wish.

The Academic modules are appropriate for those applying for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Administered by UCLES on behalf of the British Council, it is an internationally recognized exam for testing English Language competence. It is accepted by many British Universities and Colleges as a measure of ability, they usually state the Band they require for entry.

This test is available most weeks throughout the year. Please note that we do need good notice if you have a specific date in mind. Two months notice should be regarded as a minimum, while three months notice is recommended for the busy summer months.

As part of our service to students, our Accommodation and Welfare Manager will be happy to arrange accommodation through our Home Stay Program. Students will be allocated a carefully selected English Host Family, located within easy walking distance of the School. Our student evaluations show that the majority of students enjoy our Home Stay Program because of the quality of accommodation and food. Home Stay accommodation is also a great way to learn more about English life and to practice your conversation skills on a daily basis.

English Schools in ScarboroughOur Home Stay Program includes continental style breakfast, a packed lunch on school days, dinner every evening with the family and a laundry service. Students under 18 years may share a room with another student, but all those 18 years and over are allocated a room of their own. No student is placed in a Host Family with another student who speaks the same language, unless requested.
